Its not a "phenomena" most people know about. Mostly just mages, who have the ability to summon us.

Mmm, perhaps it does. But some see it as an accomplishment in and of itself. Typically, what we are summoned for is to fight in a Grail War. The Grail is a magical artifact that can grant any wish...and most Servants would gladly fight to have their wishes granted in their second life.

Do the Masters not want the wish themselves? I would have thought that would be the order of events.
Aha, I apologize. I was going to explain. The mages get their wishes granted as well. So, its a symbiotic relationship, you see. Mages help Servants, Servants help mages, both get what they want.
I see. Well, it's not as though you have much of a say in what happens after you're summon from the sounds of it. Either you agree to work with your new master or you disappear.
