Yes, as implied by the name, Heroic Spirits are people from history, legends, and myth who have risen to great renown in the human consciousness for their deeds. This renown is stored in a place called the Throne of Heroes, where we as Heroic Spirits can be summoned at the service of mages.
[And a shrug.]
Ah, but sometimes even renown isn't enough. Some figures of history are not stored in the Throne of Heroes, for whatever reason. Its not especially a guarantee...
That's an interesting phenomena that happens in your world.
[ a "phenomena" is the best way to describe what he hears because it's a lot. so much. he can understand it??? but??? ]
To be a hero who met their demise only to be brought back again to serve someone else—doesn't that belittle your accomplishments? A hero shouldn't have to serve anyone.
[ but he's a pirate, or more specifically, a pirate captain. the last thing he wants to do is serve anyone. ]
Its not a "phenomena" most people know about. Mostly just mages, who have the ability to summon us.
[Good old mages, keeping the summoning secrets within the family.]
Mmm, perhaps it does. But some see it as an accomplishment in and of itself. Typically, what we are summoned for is to fight in a Grail War. The Grail is a magical artifact that can grant any wish...and most Servants would gladly fight to have their wishes granted in their second life.
[ he...hm. there's just something to how douman explains it that is strangely confusing to him. in a way it's like what they've been brought here to do with some exceptions. ]
Your Masters would summon you in order for you to right in their self-made war in order for you to get your wish granted?
[ that...sounds....strange? ]
Do the Masters not want the wish themselves? I would have thought that would be the order of events.
Aha, I apologize. I was going to explain. The mages get their wishes granted as well. So, its a symbiotic relationship, you see. Mages help Servants, Servants help mages, both get what they want.
I see. Well, it's not as though you have much of a say in what happens after you're summon from the sounds of it. Either you agree to work with your new master or you disappear.

Heroic Spirit. How does one become a Heroic Spirit in your world? Is it as implied by the name?
