Yes, as implied by the name, Heroic Spirits are people from history, legends, and myth who have risen to great renown in the human consciousness for their deeds. This renown is stored in a place called the Throne of Heroes, where we as Heroic Spirits can be summoned at the service of mages.

Mmm, perhaps it does. But some see it as an accomplishment in and of itself. Typically, what we are summoned for is to fight in a Grail War. The Grail is a magical artifact that can grant any wish...and most Servants would gladly fight to have their wishes granted in their second life.
